When I was a freshman at Fremd high school way back in 1999, I did not really like science. Biology was not a class I was looking forward to but I had it first hour and started my high school career with Mr. Smiley...yes his name was really Mr. Smiley. Well, after spending my freshmen year in that class, I was hooked. In his classroom, I found a love of science and wanted to further explore my world. After chem and physics, I ended up taking AP Biology my senior year and had the great pleasure of having Mr. Smiley again. That year I had him 8th hour so in a cool twist I got to start and end high school with my favorite teacher - the man who taught me how cool it was to understand what was going on around me. Unfortunately he had retired by the time I was hired back to teach at my great alma mater but I do have the unique honor of getting to sit at his old desk.
My hope is that I can help your student to appreciate science. I know I won't be able to turn everyone into the science nerd that I became - there are days my parents question where I came from, especially when I got all excited about the moss on their patio and proceeded to teach them about it - but I hope every one of my students will no longer dread science and maybe I will be able to convert a few fellow nerds.
The purpose of this blog is to share what we are learning in class. Hopefully it can spark conversation between you and your student, or maybe just keep you up to date on one aspect of their oh-so-secretive teenage life. If you have questions about our classroom please either email me ([email protected]) or leave a comment. If you have questions about our science that we are learning, leave a comment...I am happy to look anything up and help everyone learn!
I look forward to an amazing year. I love science and I love sharing what I know. I can't wait to get to know all of the wonderful personalities in our classroom.
We will start our year talking about what characteristics all living organisms share and brush up on some general science skills. In the next entry I will get into some of the cool things we have ahead of us!
