Onto Biology Class!
10.17-10.21
Monday: On Monday we started our hidden world microscope lab. At first the students were to just make sure that they were comfortable focusing and then they started to learn about the orientation of an object underneath a microscope. Some of the cool things we looked at were:
Tuesday: With the late start, we used our shortened period to continue with the lab. As we begin our study of cells, it is going to be very important that students know how to focus a microscope properly.
Wednesday: Again with the half day we just used our time to finish viewing the specimens underneath the microscope. By this point in time, I had checked in with all of the students to make sure that they were comfortable focusing. Overall I was really impressed with how well the students were working.
Thursday: Today we took a quick quiz on the microscope and then the students had time to start researching the different organelles in their book. Organelles are the way in which a cell multitasks. Each organelle has a specialized function that helps the cell survive.
Friday: After discussing the organelles, we went over the quiz, which the students did a great job on!, and then started to talk about the major types of cells & the cell theory. Below is a diagram over what we started to discuss in terms of the different types of cells.
OPTION #1 Organelles on Facebook
For this project, you will create some organelle social networking. Just as Facebook can highlight certain aspects of relationships between people, with your help, it will do the same for cell organelles.
You will be provided with a packet of 7 blank Facebook pages. Your task will be to construct detailed Facebook pages for 7 selected organelles.
Each organelle’s page should provide substantial information, including: a picture showing the organelle’s structure, descriptions of its function, information on whether it is found in a prokaryotic cell or a eukaryotic cell, information on whether it is found in an animal cell or a plant cell, its location within the cell, additional information that is both factual and creative, and evidence of a relationship with each of the other 6 selected organelles (creative and factual wall posts).
Be sure to reference your rubric to ensure that you satisfy the requirements of this project! Enjoy!
OPTION #2 ____ The Cell as a City
For this project, you will be comparing a city (or anything you can think of…school, airport, car) to a cell recognizing that a city has specialized parts that make it work just like a cell has the specialized organelles that make it work.
You task will be to incorporate the functions of at least 10 of the organelles into your city and create a poster. In the city column, you will draw the different parts of the city. In the cell column, you will draw a picture of a cell with the organelles. Finally in the explanation column, it is crucial that you write out the part of the city and the organelle along with a detailed explanation of the analogy you have made. This description should include the function of the organelle, whether or not it is a part of a prokaryotic cell, and if it is present in a plant or animal cell.
Be sure to reference your rubric to ensure that you satisfy the requirements of this project. Enjoy!
OPTION #3 Organelle Campaign
You are the new campaign manager for your selected organelle! Many organelles are in the running, but it is up to you to get your organelle elected as The Most Important Organelle.
Your task is to create a campaign for your selected organelle that included the following items in support or your organelle:
1) A campaign poster that includes a picture, description of function, reference to the organelle’s association with prokaryotic/eukaryotic/plant/animal cells, and any other information that helps form a clear, creative, and factual message that will serve to get your organelle elected
2) A 1 page double spaced speech highlighting and expanding on the items above that your organelle would deliver to get elected
3) A smear campaign bashing each of the other 6 selected organelles in the election – creativity with factual support is the name of the game here…newspaper ads, pamphlets, posters, videotaped TV commercials, recorded radio spots, t-shirts, bumper stickers…any item that accurately draws attention to why the other organelles should NOT win the election for The Most Important Organelle. Make sure that you address the structure and function of these organelles and whether or not they are found in prokaryotes, eukaryotes, animal cells, and/or plant cells.
